WRITING in the Guardian last Friday (November 3rd - We are already at the gates of the surveillance society), Henry Porter, the editor of Vanity Fair, warns of the complacency with which modern society treats privacy. His views are timely in the United Kingdom, where the National Health Service (NHS) intends to enter the entire population's medical records into a central database system known as Spine. The debate is seriously relevant to simulation and the dream of one day capturing and modelling human physiology in silico. How will this data be protected and can patients trust hospitals and their computer staff with this most sensitive of information?
